As cattle breeds started to specialise in either beef or dairy production, the Lineback has over time been selected for improved dairy production although it remains very versatile. The Randall Lineback is a purebred remnant of lineback-patterned cattle once common in New England.Historically, Linebacks were multi-purpose, used for dairy, beef, and oxen, and served as an integral part of rural New England life for several centuries. Only calves and cows with Lineback patterns can be registered as an American Lineback. Cattle with lineback color patterns have occurred throughout the world in many breeds. Other traits in which inbreeding depression has been documented for beef cattle include percentage weaned, birth weight, pre-weaning gain, weaning weight, post-weaning gain, and final weight. Lineback definition is - an animal (as some Hereford cattle) having a stripe of distinctive color along the spine. Figure 2.

Randalls do have a colorsided lineback pattern, but are a discreet breed not related to American Lineback cattle or other linebacked cattle breeds.
