Let’s talk about sparrows. The Timberline Sparrow (Spizella breweri taverneri) is a subspecies of the Brewer’s Sparrow, but it’s in the process of becoming a separate species.
Clay-colored Sparrows tend to be more richly colored, with buffy tones on the face, while the Brewer's Sparrow tends to be more drab and pale.
Contrast the full eye-rings of Brewer's SparroW to the partial eye-rings of the Clay-colored SParrows in Figures 6 through 9. The family also includes the North American birds known as juncos and towhees. Clay-colored Sparrow - Probably the species most likely to be confused with a Brewer's Sparrow, Clay-colored Sparrows share many of the same plumage characteristics and patterns. Figure 10.
A series of trills and buzzes, the complex song of the Brewer’s Sparrow can be heard on sage flats and in montane meadows of western North America. Chipping sparrow has very distinct, narrow whitish arcs below and ABOVE the eye, contrasting with darker gray-brown feathers, and broken at front and BACK by the dark eyeline. As the name implies, the Timberline Sparrow is found near tree line, where it nests in stunted conifers.

This is a western species that spends its summers on the northern plains and its winters in the southwest, including southern California, Arizona and New Mexico, and southwestern Texas. And it’s so much more to learn. But then I turned page after page of sparrows and I realized that really, I knew nothing.

This species seems to show slightly less intraspecific variation than Clay- colored Sparrow (compare with Figures I and I I). As Brewer’s Sparrow doesn’t have much in the way of obvious field marks under the best of circumstances, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that telling Timberline from the nominate isn’t easy by any means. Audubon’s climate model predicts a noticeable decline in the summer season: only 24% remains stable, with a decrease of 73% in suitable climate space.
