A large adult Red Diamond Rattlesnake crawls up some large boulders at the edge of a desert wash in San Diego County. The red diamond rattlesnake is fairly large in size, ranging from 30 to 65 inches in length. There are two dark diagonal lines on each side of its face running from the eyes to its jaws. After trying to climb up past the top of the boulder, it crawled back down. Red diamond rattlesnakes are common in areas with little development, especially near rocky outcroppings. The tail has black and white bands just above the rattles.
