Dieter Dengler was a German-American pilot who was shot down over Laos in February 1st of 1966 during the early phase of the Vietnam war. This man had one of the most difficult lives I have ever been told about. The subject is the German-American pilot, Dieter Dengler, and his experience as a prisoner of war in the jungles of Vietnam that he explains was like that of being in a dream. As he talks, Herzog puts him in locations: His American home, his German village of Wildberg, and then the same Laotian jungles where he was shot down. But there are three moments I find disconcerting. Dengler also revisits the sites of his capture and eventual escape from the hands of the Viet Cong, recreating many events for the camera.
