Description. The Tasmanian pygmy possum (Cercartetus lepidus), also known as the little pygmy possum, is the world's smallest possum.It was first described by Oldfield Thomas in 1888, after he identified that a museum specimen labelled as an eastern pygmy possum in fact represented a species then unknown to science. Occurring from southern Queensland to eastern South Australia and also Tasmania, it is found in a range of habitats, including rainforest, sclerophyll forest, woodland and heath. They, and Brushtails, also eat flowers, fruits and veggies. The trouble is, some of those boulders have been removed to make way for ski-runs. Human food can be dangerous to possums and cause serious dietary imbalance. Possums eat the leaves, flowers and fruits of a wide variety of native and exotic trees and shrubs. Pygmy-possums don't live in trees. They like to hide underneath boulders where it's warmer and there are plenty of moths to eat. The Common Brushtail Possum may also eat grass, fungi, bird's eggs and baby birds. The possums won't cross these wide open spaces which makes it hard to go and search for a mate. Tree hollows – to nest and sleep in safely. They have many predators, which includes birds that eat smaller rodents and bigger carnivorous animals. For a long period of time, all information about the Mountain pygmy possum came from fossils, until the animal was discovered in the Australian Alps in 1966. On the mainland of Australia breeding is from spring to autumn, and on Tasmania the season is from late winter until spring. Common Brushtail Possum .
