The grey seal’s scientific name derives from the Greek for ‘hook-nosed sea pig’. Grey seal pup production has increased in both the long and short-term within almost all assessment units (Figure 5). Grey seal numbers have boomed over the last three decades, with more and more pinnipeds making British beaches their nurseries. Grey seal pup production estimates were assessed in relation to a baseline set at 1992 (or the start of the time series where this was after 1992), and by calculating the average rate of annual population change within the last reporting round (2009–2014). Within a month or so they shed the pup fur, grow dense waterproof adult fur, and leave for the sea to learn to fish for themselves. Female Grey seal can breed at around 4 years old whereas female Common seals must be 3 – 7 years old to breed and males must be 3 – 8 years old. Grey seal pup production has increased in both the long and short-term within almost all assessment units (Figure 5). As there is no decline in pup production in these areas, the targets for pup production have been met. The gestation period of the female Grey seal is 11.5 months, including a 3 month delay in the implantation of the fertilised egg.
The within‐region variation in trends of grey seal pup production highlights the importance of large‐scale monitoring programmes. More grey seal pups are being born on British coastlines than ever.
